"이/가 아니에요" is placed after a noun to indicate that the noun is the subject of the sentence.

For example, if someone asks you “학생이에요? (Are you a student?)” and you’re not a student. you can say, “학생이 아니에요(I’m not a student.)”.

‘아니에요’ is the same as the English word “no”.

So you can use it to answer questions in general.

We’ll learn more about ‘아니요 vs 아니에요’ later.

‘이 아니에요’ is used when a noun ends with a consonant
- 형이에요? (Is it your brother?)
- 아니요, 형이 아니에요. (No, it’s not my brother.)
‘가 아니에요’ is used when a noun ends with a vowel.
- 친구예요? (Is it your friend?)
- 아니요, 친구가 아니에요. (No, it’s not my friend.)
