Sending International Packages from Korean Convenience Stores - A Complete Guide to CU, GS25, and 7-Eleven

From how to send international packages from convenience stores to fees and precautions. A guide to international shipping from Korean convenience stores based on real experiences.

When living in Korea, there are times when you need to send a package to your home country. Did you know that you can send international packages from your neighborhood convenience store without having to search for a post office or delivery company?

International Package Services by Convenience Store

CU offers the most active international parcel service. Most CU stores accept EMS and regular international mail. The store owner takes it to the post office, so same-day delivery is difficult, but it will be delivered to the post office no later than the next day.
GS25 varies from store to store. Larger stores or those close to post offices will accept it, but smaller stores may refuse. It's best to check by phone in advance.
7-Eleven does not yet officially offer international parcel services. Some stores may help individually, but it's not guaranteed.

Items You Can Send and Restrictions

Convenience stores mainly accept EMS (Express Mail Service) and regular international mail. However, not all items can be sent.

Items You Can Send

  • Clothing, accessories
  • Books, stationery
  • Dried food (kimchi, snacks, etc. - check country restrictions)
  • Cosmetics (comply with liquid limits)
  • Electronics (battery removal required)

Items You Cannot Send

  • Liquids (most except cosmetics)
  • Raw food, refrigerated/frozen food
  • Electronic products with built-in batteries
  • Perfume, alcohol
  • Cash, jewelry
Since prohibited items vary by country, check the post office website in advance. Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have strict food import regulations.

Packaging and Customs Declaration Forms

You must complete the packaging before going to the convenience store. It is safest to use international mail boxes sold at the post office. General delivery boxes are also fine, but may be vulnerable to impact.
Packaging Tips:
  • Fill any empty space in the box with newspaper or bubble wrap.
  • Individually wrap fragile items and place them in the center of the box.
  • Weight limit: Up to 30kg for EMS, 20kg for regular mail.
You can fill out the customs declaration form at the convenience store, but it's easier to prepare it at home. You must write the contents accurately in English, and the price must be based on the actual purchase price. Do not write the price as ₩0 just because it is a gift.

Fees and Delivery Times

International parcel fees from convenience stores are the same as at the post office. There are no additional fees.
EMS Fees (based on 1kg):
  • Japan: ₩25,500 (2-3 days)
  • China: ₩26,000 (2-4 days)
  • USA, Canada: ₩35,000 (3-5 days)
  • Europe: ₩37,000 (3-6 days)
Regular International Mail (based on 1kg):
  • Asia: ₩15,000-18,000 (1-2 weeks)
  • Americas, Europe: ₩20,000-25,000 (2-3 weeks)
Delivery times have become irregular since COVID-19. EMS often takes 2-3 days longer than before, so send with plenty of time.

Real User Reviews and Precautions

I've sent EMS from CU a few times, and it's easier than I thought. However, there are a few things to keep in mind.
The convenience store staff may not be familiar with international parcels. Especially new part-timers may not know how to handle it. In that case, ask "Is it possible to send EMS or international mail?" and if they say no, look for another store.
Be sure to keep your receipt. It has a tracking number so you can check the delivery status. You can check it in real time on the post office website or app.
Consider purchasing insurance. When sending expensive items, it is a good idea to pay a few thousand won extra for insurance. You can be compensated in case of loss or damage.

Convenience Store vs. Post Office, Which is Better?

The advantage of convenience stores is accessibility. You can apply 24 hours a day, and you can handle it near your home. However, the staff may not be familiar with international parcels, so it may take time, and complex consultations are difficult.
The post office's advantage is expertise. The staff are international parcel experts, so you can get accurate information, and you can choose from a variety of service options. However, operating hours are limited and you often have to go far.
In my experience, it's best to divide it this way:
  • Simple items, sending to familiar countries: Convenience store
  • Complex contents, first time sending to a country: Post office
  • When you need to send urgently: 24-hour convenience store
  • When you need accurate consultation: Post office
Korea's convenience store international parcel service is better than you think. It may seem a little awkward at first, but once you do it, it's easier than you think. Use convenience stores when you want to send Korean gifts to your family back home.
