If you're a foreigner in Korea, you've probably wanted to ride the KTX at least once. It's really fast, getting from Seoul to Busan in 2 hours and 30 minutes. But when you actually try to book a ticket, it can be more complicated than you think, especially when problems arise with overseas credit card payments.

KORAIL Website
This is the most basic method. It offers Korean and English services, so if you're more comfortable with English, you can change the language settings. Simply register, select your desired date and time, departure and arrival stations, and then pay.

KORAIL Talk App
If you want to book using your smartphone, download this app. Search for 'KORAIL Talk' on the Google Play Store or App Store. The app also offers English services, making it suitable for foreigners.

Ticket Counters or Vending Machines at Stations
If digital booking is difficult, you can also buy tickets directly at the station. Major stations like Seoul Station and Yongsan Station have staff who can speak English. You can also switch the vending machine screen to English, so keep that in mind.

To be honest, you're quite likely to fail when paying with an overseas credit card on the KORAIL website and app. Even if you enter your card information correctly, you'll only see a 'Payment Failed' message. This is likely due to a problem with the KORAIL system, not your card.

If you contact the KORAIL Customer Center, they will usually answer, "Try using another card." However, you may fail even if you use another overseas card. The reason seems to be that KORAIL's payment system is not fully optimized for overseas payments.

1. Try Multiple Cards
If you have cards from various brands such as Visa, Mastercard, and American Express, try them all. Sometimes a specific card brand works while others don't.

2. Request Overseas Payment Approval from Your Card Company
Before making a payment, contact your card company and let them know that you plan to make a payment in Korea. Some card companies automatically block overseas payments.

3. Do Not Use a VPN
If you are using a VPN, turn it off and try again. The KORAIL system may view connections through VPNs with suspicion.

Ask a Korean Friend for Help
If you have a friend in Korea, you can ask them to book the ticket for you and pay them back later. Payment with a Korean card or bank transfer works without any issues.

Purchase Directly at the Station

Book in Advance During Peak Seasons

Unreserved vs. Reserved Seats
