The Ultimate Guide to Seoul Subway Transfers - 4 Steps to Avoid Confusion

Having trouble with Seoul subway transfers? We'll show you 4 essential steps and practical tips, from lines to exits, so you don't miss a thing.

The Seoul subway system is well-organized underground, but it can suddenly become confusing once you surface. Have you ever confidently made a transfer, only to choose the wrong exit and end up going in the opposite direction of your destination?

Transferring is More Than Just Changing Trains

Many people make a common mistake. They think of transferring only as "changing to a different line," but it's also a matter of walking distances. Walking from one platform to another at a transfer station can be surprisingly far, and there are often cases where you have to climb stairs because there's no escalator.
So when transferring, don't just think about "from Line X to Line Y"; consider the actual walking distance and convenience as well.

Seoul Subway 4-Step Checklist

To use the Seoul subway system properly, you need to check these 4 steps in order:

Step 1: Check the Line

Find out which line you need to take to your destination. When you search for a route on a subway app, multiple routes will appear, so don't just look at the number of transfers; check the total travel time as well.

Step 2: Check the Direction

Even if it's the same Line 2, it's a completely different direction depending on whether it's "towards Sindorim/Euljiro 1-ga" or "towards Jamsil/Seongsu." Memorize the final destination station name in advance or save it as a screenshot.

Step 3: Check Transfer Information

If you need to transfer, find out in advance which station to transfer at and which direction to go in when transferring. For stations with long transfer distances (e.g., Sindorim, Sadang, Gangnam, etc.), you need to allow plenty of time.

Step 4: Check the Exit Number

This is the most important. If you're going to a hotel near Myeongdong Station and choose the wrong exit number, you may have to walk for more than 10 minutes. When searching for your destination address, check for "[Station Name] Exit [Number]" as well.

Things to Check When Choosing an Exit

Consider these things when choosing an exit:
  • Distance to destination: Which exit is closest
  • Slope and stairs: If you have a lot of luggage, choose an exit with a gentle slope
  • Crosswalk: Check if you need to cross a major road
  • Surrounding buildings: Are there any landmark buildings or shops?
For example, if you're going shopping in Myeongdong, Myeongdong Station exits 5 and 6 are closest to the center of Myeongdong. However, if you use Euljiro 1-ga Station exit 2, it connects directly to the entrance of Myeongdong.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Transferring

Double-Check the Direction

After transferring, you must double-check the direction. Especially in the case of circular lines like Line 2, it's easy to get confused about which is faster, the inner or outer circle, even if you're going to the same destination.

Check the Escalator Locations in Advance

If you have a lot of luggage or have difficulty climbing stairs, check the location of escalators in advance when transferring. Some older stations have limited escalators.

Beware of Stations with Long Transfer Distances

Stations like Sindorim Station, Sadang Station, and Gangnam Station have considerably long transfer distances. Especially during rush hour, it takes even longer because there are so many people, so plan with plenty of time.

When the Subway Isn't Enough

Honestly, the subway has its limitations. In these situations, consider other modes of transportation:

When You Have a Lot of Luggage

If you have more than 2 suitcases, a taxi or limousine bus is better than the subway. Especially at stations with many stairs, it's really hard to carry luggage up and down.

When There's a Long Walk to Your Final Destination

If you have to walk more than 15 minutes from the subway station to your hotel, consider a subway + taxi combination. Take the subway to the nearest station and finish with a taxi.

Late at Night

After 11 PM, you also need to check the last train times, and a taxi is safer than wandering around an unfamiliar neighborhood late at night.

A Few More Practical Tips

Check Your Transportation Card Balance in Advance

It's really embarrassing to get stuck at the gate due to insufficient balance while transferring. Check your balance before riding the subway, and if it's insufficient, recharge it in advance at the charging machine in the station.

Use Screenshots

Since there are sections where the internet doesn't work well underground, save the route search results as screenshots. Be sure to save the transfer station name, direction, and exit number.

Double-Check Inside the Station

Before standing on the platform, check the electronic display board again. It says "Next Station: ○○ Station, Direction: △△ Direction," so check if the direction you're going is correct before boarding.

Final Check to Perfectly Master Transfers

It's not over even after you get off the subway. Before going out the exit, double-check the exit number, and after coming up to the ground, double-check the direction from where you are standing to your destination.
If you check your current location on Google Maps or Naver Map, you'll often find that it's different from what you thought. Especially after coming up from underground, it's easy to lose your sense of direction.
It may seem complicated at first, but if you make it a habit to check these 4 steps (Line-Direction-Transfer-Exit), the Seoul subway will become much easier. Above all, remember that choosing the right exit is really important!
