Guard Alignment and Signals: The guards line up in front of Sungnyemun Gate, and the sounds of the Geumrukan announcing the hour, along with the nagak and nabal horns, resonate.
Gate Opening Ceremony: Experience the spectacle of Sungnyemun Gate opening upon the Hogun's command.
Guard Shift Change Ceremony: The 1st guard unit and the 2nd guard unit exchange duties, showcasing orderly movements. There are a total of 6 shift changes and guard procedures per day.
Gate Closing Ceremony: The event concludes with a ceremony to close Sungnyemun Gate, marking the end of the day's activities.
Patrol Ceremony: The guards conduct a dignified march patrolling the area around Sungnyemun Gate.
One-Day Patrol Guard Experience: A hands-on program allowing visitors to participate directly, offering the opportunity to become a Joseon soldier.
Getting There
Subway: Approximately a 10-minute walk from City Hall Station (Seoul Subway Line 1).
Bus: Get off at Namdaemun Market Bus Stop and walk towards Sungnyemun Gate.
Practical Tips
It's a good idea to bring a hat or sunglasses on sunny days. The Sungnyemun Guard Ceremony takes place outdoors, so dress appropriately for the season. Especially in winter, it can be windy, so dress warmly. Photography is allowed, but please be mindful not to disrupt the event. Viewing from slightly to the side rather than directly in front will allow you to appreciate the guard's movements in a more three-dimensional way.
