COEX Mall and Starfield Library: The Complete Seoul Gangnam Guide
Everything you need to visit COEX Mall in Seoul: Starfield Library free, COEX Aquarium, SM Town, Megabox, food, shopping and Bongeunsa Temple next door.
COEX Mall is the largest underground shopping mall in Asia, located in Gangnam, Seoul. Spanning 165,000㎡, it houses over 320 brands and more than 100 restaurants, along with the Starfield Library, SEA LIFE COEX Aquarium, SMTOWN@COEX Artium, and Megabox cinema. Right next door is the over 1,000-year-old Bongeunsa Temple, making it a unique place where you can experience both the cutting-edge of a modern city and the tranquility of a traditional temple in one day.
The reason I'm writing this is simple. Many tourists come to COEX just to snap a photo at the Starfield Library and leave. That's not bad, but I've seen too many people miss out on Bongeunsa Temple just a block away, or visit during a weekend afternoon and get caught in the crowds, unable to take a single decent photo.
This guide is to help first-time visitors to COEX avoid making those mistakes.

How To Get There
Subway Line 2 — The Most Convenient Way
The best way to visit COEX is by taking Subway Line 2 to Samsung Station. Exiting through Exit 5 or 6 connects you directly to COEX underground. You can enter the mall without stepping outside, which is especially convenient on rainy days or during the hot summer. It takes about 3–5 minutes to walk from Samsung Station to the COEX entrance.
Subway Line 9 Bongeunsa Station
You can also access COEX from Bongeunsa Station on Line 9, Exit 7. As the name suggests, this exit is towards Bongeunsa Temple, making it a convenient route if you plan to visit the temple first and then move to COEX. It's a 3–5 minute walk from the exit to COEX. From Exit 1 of Bongeunsa Station, you can directly access the temple entrance.
Bus and Taxi
It's also possible to reach COEX by bus from around Gangnam. If you're taking a taxi, just tell the driver "COEX Mall" and they'll know where to go. It's within a 30-minute reach from anywhere in Seoul, and booking through the KakaoT app is convenient. However, be aware that traffic around Teheran-ro can be congested on weekends, so plan accordingly.
Parking
COEX's underground parking is large but can be very crowded on weekends and during major events. Parking costs about ₩3,000 per 30 minutes. Considering the traffic congestion in Gangnam, it's strongly recommended to use the subway unless you have a specific reason to drive. If you're visiting the aquarium, enter your car number at the parking discount machine inside for a 4-hour parking discount.
TIP: Use the KakaoMap or Naver Map app to search "COEX" for precise directions from Samsung Station to COEX via the underground passage. If it's your first visit, the underground connections can be confusing, so keep the app open while you move. Follow the blue guide line on the floor to connect directly to the Starfield Library.
What Is COEX Mall?
COEX stands for Convention and Exhibition, and it first opened in 1979 as Korea's first large international convention center. It has since evolved into a cultural complex with the addition of the underground shopping mall. In 2014, the Starfield Group took over operations, leading to a major renovation and the rebranding as 'Starfield COEX Mall.' The opening of the Starfield Library in 2017 has made it a must-visit spot for tourists from all over Korea and abroad.
Currently, COEX is not just an underground mall but also includes the COEX Convention Center, InterContinental Seoul COEX Hotel, Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas Hotel, and ASEM Tower, forming a massive complex. Located in the heart of Gangnam's business district, it attracts business visitors and locals on weekdays, while families and tourists fill the space on weekends.
To give you a sense of its scale — the underground mall alone covers 165,000㎡. It takes at least half a day to explore properly, and if you plan to shop, a full day might not be enough. If it's your first visit, prioritize the places you most want to see.
Starfield Library (Byeolmadang Library)
Honestly, when I first saw photos of the Starfield Library, I thought they were exaggerated edits. Seeing it in person was even more impressive. The 13-meter-high bookshelves filling the 2,800㎡ atrium are overwhelming in scale. The moment you step in, you understand why people come to COEX.
Also known as Byeolmadang Library, this space holds about 70,000 books and over 600 domestic and international magazines. You can freely read books on humanities, economics, hobbies, foreign languages, and more. While you can't borrow or check out books, you can sit and read as much as you like. And the best part — entry is free. There aren't many places in Seoul where you can enjoy a space of this size for free.
The library is spread over the first and second floors, with general reading areas and digital resource access. There's also a separate section for foreign language books, including English, Japanese, and Chinese. Right next to the library is the % Arabica Seoul Starfield Cafe, where you can enjoy a coffee while reading.
Photography Tips
Starfield Library is one of the most Instagrammed spots in Seoul. To take great photos, there are a few things to keep in mind. The best shots are taken vertically from the central aisle facing the bookshelves. You can also get good shots from the first floor with the shelves as a backdrop or from the second-floor railing looking down for a unique angle. During the day, the atmosphere is bright and airy, while in the evening, the warm lighting creates a more dramatic ambiance. Many people visit twice because the vibe is completely different from day to night.
TIP: Crowds start to build from 11:30 AM on weekends. If your goal is photography, visit right after it opens at 10:30 AM on weekdays for the least crowded experience. It's also relatively quiet after 9 PM. If you visit during a busy time, be patient — there are always moments when the crowds thin out.
SEA LIFE COEX Aquarium
The COEX Aquarium is a large marine life exhibit located on the basement level of COEX Mall. You can see a variety of marine and freshwater creatures, including jellyfish, sharks, rays, and penguins. The underwater tunnel section is particularly impressive — walking through the transparent acrylic tunnel, you can watch sharks and rays swim overhead. It's fascinating for both kids and adults. Known for having the most shark species among Korean aquariums, it features over 40,000 aquatic creatures across 14 themed zones.
SEA LIFE is a global aquarium brand with locations in several countries, and the Seoul COEX branch is one of the larger ones. The total viewing time is about 1–1.5 hours, though it may take longer if you have children. If you take your time at each exhibit, expect to spend more than 1.5 hours. There are also interactive areas and photo zones for children.
- Operating Hours: Daily 10:00~20:00 (last entry 19:00), open year-round
- Admission (online purchase): Adults approx. ₩27,000 / Children approx. ₩24,000
- Admission (on-site purchase): Adults ₩35,000 / Children ₩31,000
- Under 36 months: Free (passport or proof required)
- Estimated Visit Duration: 1–1.5 hours
TIP: You can save a significant amount by purchasing tickets in advance through online platforms like Klook or KKday. During peak season weekends, the on-site queue can be long, so online booking is highly recommended. Enter your car number at the parking discount machine inside the aquarium for a 4-hour parking discount.
SMTOWN@COEX Artium — A Must for K-pop Fans
SMTOWN@COEX Artium is a K-pop cultural complex located within the COEX complex, serving as the official fan space for SM Entertainment. If you're a fan of artists like EXO, NCT, aespa, SHINee, TVXQ, or BoA, this is a must-visit. Even if you're not into K-pop, it's an interesting place to experience the scale and excitement of Korean pop culture.
Entry to the building itself is free, but there is a separate admission fee for the SM Town Museum. From the first floor to the top, you'll find MD shops, photo zones, artist-related exhibits, and cafes. Official MD products are a major shopping destination for SM fans. The museum showcases costumes, trophies, stage props, and offers some interactive exhibits. If you're interested in K-pop, visiting gives you a sense of the scale of Korea's entertainment industry.
- Operating Hours: Daily 11:00~22:00
- Building Entry: Free
- SM Town Museum: ₩18,000 (on-site) / ₩16,200 (online booking)
Megabox COEX — One of Seoul's Best Cinemas
Within COEX Mall is the Megabox cinema, a large multiplex with 16 screens and 4,000 seats, offering a premium movie-watching experience in Seoul. In addition to regular theaters, it features a Dolby Cinema screen and 'The Boutique,' a private luxury theater. The Boutique is a special theater for a small audience, recommended for those seeking an experience beyond a regular cinema.
It screens the latest Korean releases as well as Hollywood blockbusters with subtitles. Some films offer English subtitles or dubbing, so check the Megabox app or website for showtimes before your visit. Adding a movie to your COEX visit can make your day even more fulfilling.
TIP: Seats for popular screenings at Megabox COEX sell out quickly on weekends. It's safer to book in advance through the Megabox app. Weekday morning screenings are cheaper for regular theaters.
Where To Eat & Drink
Food Court & Restaurants
COEX Mall has over 100 food and beverage outlets, offering plenty of choices. You can enjoy a variety of cuisines, including Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Western, and Southeast Asian. Several dining areas are spread across the basement levels 1 and 2, with casual eateries near the Megabox cinema for a quick bite. Popular restaurants can have wait times during lunch (12:00~14:00) and dinner (18:00~20:00), so aim to dine before 11:30 for lunch and between 17:30~18:00 for dinner to avoid waiting.
If you're looking for Korean snacks or soup, the dining area near the basement food court offers reasonable prices and good taste. For a more special meal, there are Italian, Japanese omakase, and upscale Korean restaurants. Being in Gangnam, food prices are slightly higher than the Seoul average, but the quality is also high.
Cafes
There are various cafes, from well-known chains like Starbucks and Twosome Place to independent cafes and dessert shops. The % Arabica Seoul Starfield Cafe, which opened in September 2022 right next to the Starfield Library, has gained popularity. As the first Korean store of the Japanese global coffee brand, it matches the Instagram vibe of the library, often resulting in long lines. The SM official cafe inside SMTOWN Artium offers artist-themed drinks, making it a memorable experience for fans.
TIP: To save on meal costs, consider buying Korean-style ready meals or bread from the basement food court in COEX Mall. Bakery chains like Paris Baguette and Tous Les Jours offer simple meals, and there are several convenience stores as well.
Shopping Guide
COEX Mall features over 320 stores, including fashion, beauty, electronics, books, and lifestyle brands. For luxury shopping, check out Chanel and Gucci. If you're interested in Korean local brands, 8Seconds, Style Nanda, and Aland are great starting points. Style Nanda, in particular, is a Korean fashion brand with a global fanbase online, offering a chance to see and choose items in person at their offline store.
If you're into books and stationery, visit Youngpoong Bookstore. It stocks a wide range of foreign language books, magazines, stationery, and various goods, making it fun to browse. For K-beauty products, there's an Olive Young store, and you can experience the latest electronics at Samsung Digital Plaza.
- Luxury: Chanel, Gucci
- K-Fashion: 8Seconds, Style Nanda, Aland
- Books & Stationery: Youngpoong Bookstore
- Beauty: Olive Young, Innisfree, etc.
- Electronics: Samsung Digital Plaza
- K-pop MD: Official store inside SMTOWN@COEX Artium
When To Visit
The best time to visit COEX Mall is between 10:30 AM and 12:00 PM on weekdays. During this time, there are fewer crowds, and you can take leisurely photos at the Starfield Library. Conversely, weekend afternoons and public holidays are the busiest times, especially between 12 PM and 6 PM when crowds peak. Revisit after 9 PM to enjoy the Starfield Library with its lights on in a more relaxed setting.
Another important point — when large exhibitions or international events are held at the COEX Convention Center, it gets much busier than usual. It's a good habit to check the event schedule on the COEX official website (coex.co.kr) before visiting. On weekends with game events or large conventions, both the parking lot and the mall interior can be extremely crowded.
- Recommended Visit Time: Weekdays 10:30~12:00, after 21:00
- Moderately Crowded: Weekday afternoons
- Very Crowded: Weekends 12:00~18:00, public holidays, major convention event days
Seasonal Highlights & Events
Christmas Season (Late November to Early January)
COEX Mall is one of the most spectacularly decorated places in Seoul during the Christmas season. Large trees and light decorations are set up throughout the mall, and a giant 'Book-tree' appears in the Starfield Library. The Christmas tree sculpture made of books against the 13-meter bookshelves is one of the most breathtaking sights of the year. During this time, the outdoor plaza hosts winter events like the Gangnam Media Winter Festa, transforming the entire area into Seoul's largest winter festival zone. If you're visiting Seoul during Christmas, COEX is a must on your itinerary.
Spring & Autumn Pop-up Events
The Starfield Library regularly hosts various pop-up exhibitions and cultural events in spring and autumn. These include book signings by popular authors, independent publication markets, and art installations. On event days, you can enjoy a special atmosphere different from usual. Check the COEX official SNS (@starfield_library) or website beforehand to find out about ongoing events.
Bongeunsa Temple — A Thousand-Year-Old Temple Next to COEX
Surprisingly few tourists visiting COEX also stop by Bongeunsa Temple, which is a shame. Just a 5-minute walk away is a temple founded in 794 during the Silla dynasty, with over 1,200 years of history. This temple, quietly standing amidst skyscrapers and modern shopping malls, highlights the dramatic contrasts within the city of Seoul.
Within Bongeunsa, you'll find the 23-meter-high Maitreya Buddha, along with the Daeungjeon Hall, Beopwangru Pavilion, Jinyeomun Gate, and several other halls and pagodas. Visit early in the morning or in the evening to hear the monks' chants. In spring, cherry blossoms and magnolias bloom, and in autumn, the temple grounds are painted with fall colors. The view of the temple's tiled roofs against the backdrop of modern buildings makes for a unique photo opportunity. The fact that you can find such tranquility in the heart of bustling Gangnam is part of Seoul's charm.
Entry is free, and it's open daily from 3 AM to 10 PM. As it's a temple, please maintain silence and respect during your visit. Evening prayers start at 6:40 PM, and morning prayers at 4:10 AM. It's polite to observe quietly during prayer times.
- Address: 531 Bongeunsa-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul
- Subway: Line 9, Bongeunsa Station, Exit 1 (5-min walk), Line 2, Samsung Station, Exit 5·6 (10-min walk)
- Operating Hours: Daily 03:00~22:00
- Admission: Free
TIP: After shopping at COEX Mall, visit Bongeunsa in the evening to experience the special atmosphere created by the city's lights and the temple's traditional lighting. The temple looks completely different at night compared to the day. Entering at dusk when the sun sets in gold is particularly beautiful.

How much is the COEX Aquarium entry fee?
For online reservations, adults are approx. ₩27,000, and children are approx. ₩24,000. On-site purchases are more expensive, with adults at ₩35,000 and children at ₩31,000. Children under 36 months are free, but proof of age is required. You can save by purchasing in advance through online platforms like Klook or KKday.
How do I get there by subway?
The most convenient way is to use Subway Line 2, Samsung Station, Exit 5 or 6. The exit connects directly to COEX Mall via an underground passage, allowing easy access regardless of the weather. If using Line 9, it's a 3–5 minute walk from Bongeunsa Station, Exit 7.
How crowded is it on weekends?
Weekends, especially between 12 PM and 6 PM, are very crowded. Starfield Library can be so busy that taking leisurely photos is difficult, and restaurants may have waiting lines. If possible, visit early on weekend mornings (right after the 10:30 AM opening) or on weekdays. COEX is even more crowded on weekends with convention events.
How long does it take to get to Bongeunsa?
It's about a 5-minute walk from the main entrance of COEX Mall to the entrance of Bongeunsa Temple. The two are very close, making them an ideal combination for a visit. From Exit 1 of Bongeunsa Station on Line 9, walk straight to see the temple entrance.
Can you see everything in one day?
You can see the aquarium, Starfield Library, SMTOWN Artium, and Bongeunsa all in one day. If you don't spend too much time shopping, 6–7 hours is enough to explore leisurely. If you want to include a movie at Megabox, plan for a full day starting at 10:30 AM and staying into the evening.
Is there anything special to see during the Christmas season?
Yes, the Christmas season (late November to early January) is one of the peak times to visit COEX. The Book-tree installation at Starfield Library and the mall's dazzling light decorations are highlights of a winter trip to Seoul. However, it's much more crowded than usual during this period, so a weekday visit is strongly recommended.
In Conclusion
If you can only visit one mall in Seoul, I'd choose COEX without hesitation. From the overwhelming bookshelves of Starfield Library, the SEA LIFE Aquarium that the whole family can enjoy, the SM Artium for K-pop fans, premium movie experiences at Megabox, to Bongeunsa Temple just a 5-minute walk away — this is more than enough to fill an entire day in Seoul.
Visiting Bongeunsa amidst the skyscrapers of Gangnam especially highlights the dramatic contrasts of Seoul as a city. The fact that a 1,200-year-old temple and Asia's largest underground shopping mall are just a 5-minute walk apart is an experience unique to Seoul. First-time visitors should definitely come on a weekday morning. To get a good photo at Starfield Library, visiting during a quiet time is crucial.
