Getting Your ARC in Korea: A Must-Have Guide for Foreign Residents

A detailed guide, based on personal experience, to obtaining your Alien Registration Card (ARC), which is mandatory for foreigners staying in Korea for more than 90 days.

Why Do You Need an ARC?

If you're a foreigner staying in Korea for more than 90 days, you're legally required to get an Alien Registration Card (ARC). It's not optional! Having an ARC makes daily life much easier because you can use it as an ID instead of your passport.

Applying Individually vs. Through Your School

There are two main ways to apply: you can either go to the immigration office yourself, or you can participate in a group application through your school.
Advantages of applying individually: You can do it on your own schedule, and the fee is cheaper at ₩30,000.
Advantages of applying through your school: You can get help from the school, and there's less chance of making mistakes with the documents or procedures. However, the fee is ₩40,000, and they only accept cash.

Making an Appointment on HiKorea (Individual Application)

If you're applying individually, you absolutely MUST make an appointment on the HiKorea website. They won't accept walk-ins.
The Seoul Immigration Office is located at 151, Mokdongdong-ro, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul. It's about a 10-minute walk from Omokgyo Station (Subway Line 5). If it's your first time, give yourself plenty of time to get there.

Important Notes When Booking

Popular time slots fill up quickly, so it's best to book as early as possible. It can be especially difficult to book during the beginning of the semester when there's a rush of foreign students.

Complete Checklist of Required Documents

Make sure you have everything! If you're missing even one document, you'll have to come back.
  • Original passport – obviously essential!
  • Photo – A color passport photo taken within the last 6 months.
  • ARC application form – You can fill it out on the spot or download it in advance.
  • Certificate of Enrollment – If you're a Hanyang University student, you can get it from the automatic issuing machines in Hanyang Plaza, the Baeknam Library, or the Student Union lobby.
  • Proof of Residence – Dorm or studio apartment contract.
  • Photocopy of your passport and visa – Make sure to bring copies.
You also need to buy ₩30,000 worth of government revenue stamps, which you can purchase on-site with cash or card.

The Application Process on the Day

When you arrive at the immigration office, take a number and wait. The wait can be quite long during peak season, so bring a book or a phone charger.
When it's your turn, submit your documents and register your fingerprints. You have to scan all ten fingers. Then, they'll take your photo, and the application is complete.

Receiving Your ARC

It usually takes about 6-7 weeks to be issued. It takes longer than you'd think, so don't get impatient. There are two ways to receive it:
In-person pickup: Go back to the immigration office and pick it up yourself. You must bring your ID.
Group pickup through your school: If you applied through your school, you can receive it from the school.

A Very Important Caution

If you leave Korea before receiving your ARC, your visa will automatically be canceled. This is not a joke! Even if you've applied for the ARC, it's best to avoid traveling abroad until you receive it.
If you absolutely have to leave the country, contact the immigration office in advance.

Help Available for Hanyang University Students

Hanyang University students can get help from the Office of International Affairs in the International Lounge on the 1st floor of the Student Union, or from the Global student union Hanyang One World (HOW). You can get advice on not only ARC issuance but also on adapting to life in Korea in general.
Hanyang University usually has a group application period every March, typically from March 12th to 18th. You can apply at kisfvisa.org.

In Conclusion

Getting your ARC can be a hassle, but it's the first step to living in Korea. As long as you prepare your documents properly and make a reservation, it should go smoothly. If you have any questions, the most reliable thing to do is contact your school's international office or the immigration office directly.
